When Ichagarh Wadi Farmer Producer Company Limited (FPCL) was incorporated in 2021 in Saraikela-Kharsawan, Jharkhand, it marked a new beginning for smallholder farmers who had long struggled with scattered markets, fluctuating prices, and limited bargaining power. The idea was simple yet transformative: if farmers unite, they can create stronger opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Today, the FPO has grown into a vibrant collective of 538 shareholders, with an impressive 32.62% women membership — a sign that women are not only part of the farming workforce but are also stepping into leadership and decision-making roles.

Laying Strong Foundations

In its early days, Ichagarh Wadi FPCL focused on building organizational strength. With support from Bhoomi Ka, members took part in numerous capacity-building workshops on topics like FPO management, governance, post-harvest handling, ethical packaging, marketing, and branding.

These sessions gave farmers the tools to not only run the FPO more effectively but also to view agriculture through a business lens. Members learned how to draft business plans, identify new opportunities, and think strategically about growth.

“Earlier we sold our crops individually and faced losses. Now, through the FPO, we can plan together, sell collectively, and secure better prices,” says one of the members proudly.

Expanding Market Linkages

As the FPO matured, it began to focus on creating market linkages that could give its members direct access to fair and reliable buyers. By selling collectively and negotiating better rates, the farmers reduced their dependence on local middlemen.

The outreach of Ichagarh Wadi FPCL has also expanded, helping it connect with buyers beyond its immediate geography. This shift has not only improved incomes but also strengthened the confidence of farmers to imagine farming as a sustainable livelihood.

Sustainable and Trusted Practices

The FPO has also benefited from council support on Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) — a community-led certification process for organic farming. This has built transparency and trust, assuring consumers that the food they buy is safe, chemical-free, and sustainably grown.

For many members, adopting these practices was not just about accessing new markets but also about reviving traditional knowledge and preserving the health of their soils.

A Model for Inclusion and Growth

One of the most inspiring aspects of Ichagarh Wadi FPCL is the growing participation of women, who now make up nearly one-third of its members. Women are actively involved in decision-making, marketing, and value addition activities, bringing fresh perspectives and determination to the collective.

The FPO’s inclusive approach has positioned it as a model for community-driven entrepreneurship in the region. By showing that farmers can come together, learn, innovate, and expand markets, Ichagarh Wadi is inspiring neighboring communities to follow a similar path.

Looking Ahead

The journey of Ichagarh Wadi FPCL is still unfolding, but its vision is clear: to strengthen smallholder farmers, especially women, and create a dignified, sustainable, and profitable future for agriculture in Jharkhand.

As the FPO continues to grow, it carries with it the hopes of hundreds of farming families who believe in the power of collective action. With the ongoing support of Bhoomi Ka and allied networks, Ichagarh Wadi FPCL is not just producing food — it is producing resilience, opportunity, and change.
